The United States Environmental Protection Agency identifies and remediates sites contaminated with hazardous waste, called Superfund sites. Superfund brings awareness to the existence of these sites and highlights that they are pervasive, often unassuming, and positioned in community. Different socioeconomic groups assume the detrimental impacts of hazardous waste to varying degrees. An increased understanding of Superfund sites—how they occur, are identified, and are prioritized for remediation—will allow the public to proactively mitigate their occurrence and demand equitable redress.
